Tamarind is a native plant from tropical Africa, but it was taken to India so many years ago that some manuscripts mentioned it as a native plant from the Indian continent. Since the sixteenth century it has been cultivated in Central and South America, where it has adapted to the climate and soil.

The Tamarind pod looks like a big ‘peanut’, long with a coarse brown skin, but inside a sweet pulp covers big seeds.

Tamarind has a very special sweet and sour taste.

Tamarind contains tartaric acid and vitamin B1.

Tamarind is available as:

· Natural fruit pulp (frozen)
• Powdered fruit
